How to modernize a legacy system without stopping the business

Avoid the big-bang rewrite trap

Full rewrites promise a clean slate and reliably deliver missed deadlines and business disruption. We default to incremental modernization on every legacy engagement, even when a rewrite looks tempting.

The strangler-fig pattern

New functionality is built alongside the legacy system and gradually intercepts traffic route by route, until the legacy system can be safely retired. This keeps the business running throughout the migration.

Feature flags and shadow traffic

Routing a copy of production traffic to the new system without serving its response lets you validate correctness under real load before a single user is affected by the cutover.
