AI agents vs. traditional automation: what's actually different

Marcus OrtegaVP of AI & Data EngineeringApril 22, 20265 min read

The distinction that actually matters

Traditional automation follows a predefined path: if X, then Y. An AI agent decides its own path toward a goal, choosing which tools to call and in what order based on the situation in front of it.

When traditional automation wins

If a workflow is well-defined, high-volume, and low-tolerance for variance — payment processing, standard approvals — deterministic automation remains faster, cheaper, and more auditable than an agent.

When agents win

Agents earn their complexity when a workflow has too many branching paths to hard-code, requires synthesizing unstructured information, or needs to adapt its approach based on intermediate results.
